Ask about features separately
| Need | Question for the branch | Possible extra check |
|---|---|---|
| Basic account | Can I open an account in my current status? | Identity, address and purpose |
| Debit card | Can it be issued and used online? | Account restrictions |
| Mobile banking | Can it be activated today? | Phone and identity verification |
| International transfer | What limits and documents apply? | Source and purpose of funds |
Define the account you actually need
Receiving salary, paying rent, using a domestic debit card and sending money abroad are different needs. A basic account may not include every feature immediately, and transaction limits can apply. Explain your purpose clearly rather than asking only whether a foreigner can open an account.
Bank policies operate alongside customer-identification and financial-security obligations. Frontline staff may request evidence connecting you to Korea, such as residence information, employment or study documents.
Contact the branch first
Choose a branch near your work, school or home and ask what it currently requires for your nationality and status. Record the date and the channel used. A national call center can explain general policy, but the branch will handle the application.
- Passport and current residence document, if issued
- Korean address and reachable phone number
- Evidence of work, study or another account purpose
- Tax-residency information when requested
- Documents for the specific feature you need
Treat online access as a separate task
Before leaving, confirm whether mobile banking is active, which transfer limits apply and how identity verification works. Ask what happens if you replace your phone or leave Korea temporarily.
